No, switching energy suppliers will not affect your service reliability. Competitive retailers and Community Retailers offer differences in price and contract features, but your electricity or natural gas will still be delivered through the same network of wires or pipes. By law, local utility companies must provide the same level of service, emergency response, and meter reading regardless of your chosen supplier. If a Community Retailer were to suddenly cease operations, their customers would automatically be enrolled with the regulated rate provider.

Using a solar power system can significantly lower your electricity costs. Depending on your system's size, you might offset some or all of your monthly electricity usage. However, you'll still need to pay for transmission and distribution charges, taxes, and other fees since your system remains connected to the grid.

If you produce more electricity than you consume, the excess is sold to the grid at the same rate you pay for electricity, generating a credit. If your credit exceeds your monthly bill, the surplus will roll over to the next month.

After installing solar, your utility bill will primarily change in four areas:

Energy Charge: This cost reflects the energy consumed from the grid. With solar, your system generates energy first, so this charge should decrease compared to a home without solar.

Micro-generation Credit: This new line item appears after installing solar. It represents any excess energy your system generates and sells back to the grid. The credit amount depends on factors like the number of solar panels installed, your home’s energy needs, and your current electricity rate.

Distribution Charge: This charge has both a fixed and variable component. The fixed part remains unchanged, while the variable part, based on grid consumption, should decrease with solar as you use less grid electricity.

Transmission Charge: Similar to the distribution charge, this typically has a variable component based on grid consumption, which should also be lower with solar.

Balancing Pool Allocation: This will be positively impacted by lower usage, though it has a negligible overall impact on your bill.

The Rate Riders, Local Access Fee, and Administration Charge are not affected by micro-generation.

1. HI Export Solar Rates: Choose the HI Solar Club rate for months you are over-producing to maximize revenue. Typically March to October.

2. LO Export Solar Rate: Choose the LO Solar Club rate for months you are using more energy than you are generating to lower your utility costs. Typically winter months— November to February.

3. Cash Back Program: Earn cash back on all the energy you import from the grid each year.

In Alberta, the Micro-generation Regulation allows you to generate enough power to meet your yearly consumption but not exceed it. Excess power earns you a credit on your bill for each kWh sent back to the grid at your electricity rate.
